Branding You

YOUR BRAND
Is a way to identity YOU on paper / virtually /  website / etc. will be developed with your image.
> Your  designed brand should remain consistent throughout all of your take-aways, including your gallery check list, cv, bio / statement, self published catalogue / business cards / post cards, etc.

> Visually your brand should give some indication of what type of work you may do
It should be your own design and not a template found on the web.

To build your brand, you need to know what your brand equals or what you want it to equal.

Write down all the characteristics that describe what you are and how you would like to be perceived.

Once you compile that list, you could fine-tune it and make sure you have full command of your brand in order to reach your customers and, more importantly, your potential customers.

The adjectives and characteristics that make up your brand ideally differentiate you from your competitors and provide a clear understanding of what you are about.

Writing your Biography

Write a brief biography to introduce yourself, highlight achievements, list your credentials and any other notable projects with which you are involved.

List your home town and or your birth place. You do not have to put your year of birth - this only gives your audience the information of how old you are.

Have you been involved in any free lance work, gallery assistant work, professional artist assistant?

Bios should be short and concise, listing only relevant information. I am asking you to be as short and to the point as possible. Write towards 150 words maximum. Bios that wax on for far too long are not read and only get tedious.

Avoid listing personal statistics, such as family and hobbies; instead angle the bio to the intended audience, whether for a personal website or a professional gallery experience or networking website.

Introduce Yourself
Begin the bio by introducing yourself, and always write in the third person. For example, write "Jen Salt is a sculptor and installation artist" rather than "I am a sculptor.” State what year your relevant work experience began, such as "has been educated in outdoor sculpture; wood, glass, ceramics since 2014." List any areas of specialized expertise. What type of art / photographic processes do you know?

You may include the importance of a theme that is prevalent in a great amount of your work.

Education and Credentials
List your education after the introduction sentence, including the name of any degrees (majors and minors) you have earned and the institution you attended. Include your year of graduation.  Include any other relevant experience, such as additional certifications earned as well as the names of any professional organizations that count you as a member.

Notable Achievements
State any notable achievements or awards earned. Keep the information relevant to the intended audience of the bio. Artists can briefly list the galleries / museums that have show cased your work.  You may also wish to include any scholarships received, awards and other honors. Art professionals can highlight awards or other recognition achieved in their careers.

Closing Statement
Conclude the bio by briefly stating any current or upcoming projects, such as a new exhibition to be mounted. The last sentence should state where you reside, such as "Jen Salt lives and works in Syracuse, NY.”

Adjust the bio as necessary when your education, expertise or achievements change to reflect the most current information.

afterword . the addendum

that which to be added
n. pl. Addenda

A thing to be added; an appendix or addition

The addendum is a written work that highlights supplementary material made to an original document.

It is also known as the Afterword or Appendix.

The addendum seeks to help clarify ideas raised in the paper and to critically connect concepts that were later discovered in the student’s research not made in the original Capstone paper.

Following the completion of your exhibition and oral defense, each student will write a two page (minimum) ADDENDUM or AFTERWORD to incorporate into their Capstone research papers. We ask that you write the Addendum, post oral defense as this is the time that you have the ability to see your year long project come to an end with the defense of your Capstone paper accompanied by your Thesis exhibition.

Think of the afterword as supplementary material that states something that has not been said in the paper; something that has been recently discovered.
This written work should state the impact of the student’s scholarly research and the student’s ongoing creative work and how each has served the other’s advancements.
It is an opportunity for the student to look backwards and forwards simultaneously.
An addendum brings together points that may have been raised at your oral defense or comments made by a gallery visitors that relay a meaningful idea that you never thought of prior.

The student needs to connect the concepts raised in their Thesis Capstones and other source materials.  It is anticipated that this is a thoughtfully authored work will help place the student’s creative output into the context of the art historical practice they are about to enter as professional artists.

The writing should be reflective of how your Capstone research paper has informed the creative work in your Thesis exhibition.

And impactful the other way; if your creative progress influentially steered the Research paper.

installation details

HARDWARE / PAINT / TOOLS
Plan on bringing your own tools including hammer, nails, screws, tape measure, small hand held level
Some basic tools provided – but do not count on these! Push pins, basic sheet wall screws, etc. provided; “L” nails and other specialty hardware need to be provided by exhibitor. I have a number of chrome 'bull dog' clips
Gallery walls cannot be painted any color other than the Gallery paint provided in the gallery closet
No painting on walls, no drawing on walls, etc.
No hanging of anything from the ceiling unless you have the direct approval from the Gallery Director
Do not attempt to spackle seam that is created by moveable walls

LETTERSET / ADHESIVES & LABELS
and the GALLERY CHECK LIST
Vinyl letterset may be installed on the wall (obtained at Absolute Sign and Awning, both on Erie Blvd.)
Use only REMOVABLE WALL mounts such as 3M Command Hook with Adhesive Strip, silicon pads, Velcro adhesive strips on the wall.  All are simple to install and deinstall from gallery wall, with little to no wall damage.
No Glue adhesive spray on the walls (and yes, we've had it happen in the past!)
No stickers, vinyl letter set, or other installed on maple floor - speak to the Director if you have an idea
Labels created, proof read and printed ultimately on cover-stock paper.  I laminate the labels for all gallery exhibitions for extra strength and professional ‘finish’
Apply to wall surface with REMOVABLE Silicon poster squares or any damage-free adhesive - double sided tape
A typed Gallery Checklist is useful, copied and left at Monitor’s desk for pick up and visitor reference. Make sure you put your contact information on it!
Do NOT use industrial strength permanent adhesives such as DUCT TAPE or double sided carpet tapes on walls or floors!

SPOT + INSTALL EXHIBITION + DIRECT LIGHTING
Pull out all suspended walls if you believe they will be used  (pull gently with help of two people, running the walls on the tracks is much like driving railroad cars).
Place pedestals from the Gallery closet you believe you will be using (you may paint these to freshen these up)
Place art work on a sheet (or protective covering) on the floor plane where you believe the optimum viewing range is and on pedestals.
Installation “eye level” is approximately 52" > 50” – 55”.  If using this as your optimum viewing range, eye level should ‘hit’ this mark ½ way area of the work.
Installation can only occur during gallery OPEN hours.
Should extra hours be needed, they must occur directly following the Gallery closing hours until the close of Reisman Hall at 11 PM.
Should extra hours be necessary, only reliable students who will be held responsible for the safeguarding to any works within the gallery limits and the gallery proper. Students promise NOT to climb on the 18' ladder after hours.
Students who remain in the gallery after hours are only those who are reliable, and must know they will be held accountable for the safeguarding of any exhibits, objects, tools and the gallery itself. Notification of after hour installation, student names, must be emailed to the Gallery Director and Director of Security,  4 days prior of the installation date.

oral defense preparations

items to consider

organization
Your Oral Defense should be 25 - 30 minutes, tops
Prior to starting, a sign will be placed on the outside Gallery door "Oral Defense in Progress. Do NOT disturb"
There will be no Q + A's during your presentation. At the Conclusion of your presentation we have 15 minutes of Q + A's
Make sure font is large enough and easy to read at a 20' distance
Organize your multi media presentation to be followed easily with smooth transitions, both conceptually and visually
Yes, you may use index cards!
Make use of highlight or bulleted text to direct your audience to your main talking points
Consider using your title page from your Capstone Research paper as your opening slide, noting the name of your Capstone, your name and your Committee members' names (increase names to larger or bold font), an image
Make sure you identify yourself as a BFA Candidate on this slide
You may wish to include some biographical information on yourself that supports and has helped fuel the foundational ideas and/or questions from your Capstone Research paper
Reflect on the past four years of your academic life at Cazenovia College and pull in areas of study outside your Senior year's work. This may include things discovered in other classes; philosophy, in sociology, psychology, anthropology, literature, even from your extra circular activities, for example. By doing so, you are illustrating to your audience your skill in critical thinking and the ways in which you can manage making conceptual connections

Next, followed by your Thesis Statement
Should this be a paragraph long, you need to take excerpts from it, highlight or bullet
Consider using main points of your introduction, thus guiding the audience to know bits of what they are about to hear
Go through your capstone paper and hull out the main points you make within it
Your audience does not want to hear, nor can hear, many of the finer details you might have included in your research paper
Your talking points should be the over arching examples made within your research paper that will help defend your thesis
Return to your thesis question often, thereby reminding audience of what your research paper is all about
Use still visuals that assist in making your talking points clearer
Use still visuals of the individuals you are speaking of, noting their nationality, birth and death dates and qualify them as to why you are using them, noting their work (example) and give a citation to the bibliographic source you got the info from
Make use of video clips / audio (15 seconds max.) that assist in proving your point - this will also give you a little break from speaking and giving the audience pause as well!
Allow your transitions to be smooth and not jarring in concept and image
Connect an artistic or academic example made in your Capstone research paper to transition into your own work
You may make use of process photographs of your work
You may use examples from your earlier college career that was pivotal in making the work you on exhibition in your BFA Thesis Exhibition
Speak directly to the work in your exhibition as well
Your final few slides should set the tone for closure in your Oral presentation

other pointers
Make sure your Committee members have HARD copy of your Research papers, letter perfect, 2 weeks prior to your defense
Notify me 1 week prior to your Oral Defense date should you want it videotaped
If you do not want to use a remote while speaking at your presentation, organize a friend to do this at the Smart Cart stand for you. They should obviously know your cues
Make sure you have enough bios/statements, cvs, etc. to distribute place your bio / statements / cvs / business cards on the front group of chairs, thereby 'reserving' them for your Committee members
Should you get nervous, breath and remember that this will probably be the last public presentation you might make in your undergraduate degrees!
Have fun with it.
Even, show off a little!

Should you remain nervous, make eye contact with me and I will silently remind you of where you are in your presentation with gestures
